Winery

We headed out to the Bar Z Winery in Canyon, Texas after a half day of soaking in the nature at Palo Duro Canyon. The winery is not far from the Canyon, so it is perfect for stopping there after a day at the canyon. In general, the winery facilities are a large barracks-type building (painted blue), with one end being the tasting room. The tasting room is not large, seating probably about 20 people comfortably. It has a sort of calm and peaceful vibe when you add in the music and the large community coloring books. The staff was friendly, although not real forthcoming with information about the winery and the wines. The view over the plains is nice and adds to the overall ambiance. We even saw deer walking by the back of the winery.

Wines

The wine list is not very long, with only one white wine (a very nice Roussanne) and less than a handful of reds.  My tasting was Roussanne, a couple of Pinot Noir’s, and a Cabernet Sauvignon. I enjoyed the Cab, but my favorites were the 2017 and 2018 Pinots. They were both very nice. BUT, with 2017 being my favorite, it was also only $16 per bottle which is an amazing value. I bought two bottles to take with me!

Summary

Bar Z Winery is not a winery you’ll find yourself going way out of you way for, but if you are in the area, you will want to swing by. The wines are priced competitively and represent good value for Texas wine. Tastings are $25.
