The Winery
English Newsom Cellars in Lubbock is a standout example of High Plains winemaking at its finest. (Note: it was formally CapRock Winery but changed its name in 2018. Built on a strong family farming legacy, the winery is deeply connected to the Newsom Vineyards, one of the most respected grape growers in Texas. The facility itself is modern, polished, and welcoming, offering visitors a refined yet approachable atmosphere. Honestly, it is a beautiful facility. With a clear focus on quality from vine to bottle, English Newsom delivers an experience that feels both elevated and authentically rooted in West Texas. The furnishings are gorgeous, and the view of the vineyard tops off the experience.
The Wines
The wines at English Newsom are exceptional across the board, showcasing precision, balance, and a true expression of Texas terroir. Their lineup features beautifully crafted reds like Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Mourvèdre, along with crisp, vibrant whites such as Viognier and Albariño. Each wine is thoughtfully made, with depth and structure that will appeal to more experienced wine enthusiasts while still remaining accessible. The consistency and craftsmanship make their portfolio one of the strongest in the region. During my tasting, I have to give the 2023 Mourvèdre’ the prize. The others, such as the Albarino, were top notch. I did walk away with a bottle of their sparkling, which is an award winner made with the Picardan grape (a rare grape in Texas). I haven’t tried it yet, but I have a feeling it will be great. Pricing for the wines is very reasonable and represents good value.
