Introduction

I recently visited the charming tasting spot of Pontotoc Vineyard — Picnic Table in Hye, Texas, and I walked away thoroughly impressed by what this twist on the Texas Wine experience offers. Nestled in the heart of Texas Hill Country, this location works beautifully for aficionados of Texas Wine and anyone curious about the diverse offerings of Texas Wineries. From a relaxed picnic-vibe setting to serious, well-crafted wines, I found Pontotoc Picnic Table an ideal stop for both casual sipping and deeper appreciation of regional terroir. In short: I walked in with expectations for a pleasant outing and walked out excited about Texas Wine again.

What Makes This Place Different?

Pontotoc Picnic Table melds the feel of a roadside picnic retreat with a dedicated wine-making ethos, offering a 100% Texas Wine focus in a delightfully informal setting. It’s a refreshing departure from the traditional tasting-room polish common at many Texas Wineries, and I love the way they organize their tastings.

My Wine Pick

At Pontotoc Picnic Table, the standout for me was the 2022 San Fernando Academy — a blend of 30% Graciano, 30% Petite Sirah, 20% Tempranillo, 10% Monastrell, and 10% Touriga Nacional. It exemplified the strong identity of Texas Wine from Hill Country fruit; bold, complex and very Texas Wineries style.

History and Facility

The Pontotoc Picnic Table is located right alongside Highway 290 in Hye, Texas. At first when you look at it, you might not give it a second look or thought. However, this little place is full of charm and warmth, including the staff and owners. While the vineyards are up in the High Plains, this location is a second to a tasting room in downtown Fredericksburg. I enjoyed sitting out on the patio with my tasting tray and enjoying the scenery and comfort. The picnic table is equally if not more charming inside, but the weather was so awesome the day I visited that outside seating was a must!

The Wines

Memorable Wine(s): San Fernando Academy

Very Good, But Not Memorable Wine(s): the 2021 Scout

Other Wine(s): Rose’, Tempranillo, Touriga Nacional, Mourvèdre

  • Overall value of the wines: GOOD

Wine Club

The Pontotoc Wine Club is about as minimal as one could get, offering only a “case club” for $300, where members choose any 12 bottles of wine, annually.

Conclusion

In wrapping up, my visit to Pontotoc Picnic Table reinforced why Texas Wine and Texas Wineries continue to excite — here is a spot where authenticity, quality and atmosphere join forces. From the moment I settled in at a picnic table under the Texas Hill Country sky, to tasting their distinctive estate-grown Tempranillo and learning about the club perks, I left feeling I’d discovered something special. If you’re on the lookout for Texas Wine that captures place, personality and pleasure, Pontotoc is a standout. I highly recommend adding it to your itinerary.
