What Makes This Place Different?

French Connection Wines sets itself apart with its seamless integration of French winemaking techniques into the heart of Texas wine country. Their focus on Rhône varietals and sustainable practices makes them a standout among Texas wineries.

Also, the charcuterie board is unmatched at any of the Texas wineries I have previously visited, and I highly recommend it if you visit.

My Wine Pick

Of the wines I tasted, my pick is the 2019 Chateauneuf de Hye.

History and Facility

French Connection Wines was founded with the vision of bringing a slice of French winemaking tradition to Texas. Nestled in the picturesque town of Hye, the winery offers a serene and welcoming atmosphere, making it a perfect destination for wine enthusiasts. The facilities boast a beautiful tasting room with panoramic views of the surrounding vineyards, providing an ideal setting to enjoy their exquisite wines.

The winemaker (Benjamin) is also part owner, and first opened Calais Winery just off Highway 290 near Johnson City in 2016. Following that, he purchased this facility which used to be called Compass Cellars.

The Wines

The wines at French Connection are mostly made from grapes you would find in the Rhone Valley in France, but they are all made from 100% Texas produced grapes. They

Memorable Wine(s): 2019 Chateauneuf de Hye

Good, But Not Memorable Wine(s): 2022 Picpoul Blanc, 2022 Counoise, 2019 Syrah, 2019 Petite Sirah Single Vineyard, 2020 La Connection White

Not So Good Wine(s): None were undrinkable or off putting

Other Wines

I only was offered tastings of the wines on the tasting list, so no extra tastings from the winery even though it was a slow Sunday. Here are the other wines offered at French Connection:

2020 Roussanne Reserve, 2022 Vin Gris Rosé, 2021 Viognier Barrel Aged (Club members only), 2022 Viognier, 2020 La Connection Red, 2020 Dell Valley Vineyards Syrah

Wine Club

The French Connection Wine Club offers an exclusive experience for members, providing access to limited edition wines and special releases. Members enjoy curated selections 6 bottles chosen by the wine maker) delivered four times per year, alongside invitations to exclusive events and tastings. There is also a 15% discount on wines and merchandise, complimentary tastings, and four complimentary pick-up parties per year. and It’s a perfect way to stay connected with the winery and explore new, exciting flavors regularly. The specifics of the wine club are listed on the website

Conclusion

In conclusion, French Connection Wines is a jewel in the Texas wine landscape. Their dedication to quality, unique blend of French and Texan influences, and welcoming environment make it a must-visit for any wine lover. Whether you’re a local or just passing through, a visit to this winery promises a delightful experience that showcases the best of Texas wineries.

As far as the wines go, I would put them in the middle range of Texas Wineries. While the one wine stood out (my favorite pick above), I didn’t get a wow factor from any of them. Others I am certain will feel differently.
