What Makes Driftwood Estate Winery Unique

What sets Driftwood Estate Winery apart from many other Texas wineries is its breathtaking view of the Texas Hill Country.

Highlighted Wines

Driftwood does not have an extensive list of wines, but it does capture most of the wine styles you will experience in Texas. During my visit, I tasted seven of their Texas-only wines: 6 reds and one sweet wine (yes, a sweet one!). Let me say that every wine I tasted was excellent and none disappointed me. To translate, a visit to Driftwood Estate Winery will almost assuredly be a success especially if you are a red wine drinker.

2019 Lonestar Cab and the 2019 Newsome Cab

The two Cabernet Sauvignon wines both epitomize the depth and complexity of Driftwood’s offerings. With robust flavors of dark fruits, a hint of oak, and velvety tannins, these wines are a testament to the winery’s skill in crafting full-bodied reds that age gracefully. The Lonestar cab grapes came mostly from the estate with only a small amount from the high plains and is more in the style of a French cab. Of the two, I would opt for the Lonestar Cab.

2019 Sangiovese Barrel Reserve

Their Sangiovese Barrel Reserve, a silver medal winner from the 2023 Houston Rodeo Wine Competition, is a refreshing departure from the expected, showcasing the versatility of Texas vineyards. With three years in the barrel, this 100% Sangiovese wine is bright and light bodied, it’s a wine that perfectly captures the essence of summer in Texas. This wine would be best with a meal.

2019 Merlot

The 2019 Merlot, with its rich, earthy flavors and subtle spice, highlights Driftwood’s prowess in producing exceptional red wines. It’s a bold choice for those seeking a wine with character and a story to tell. This wine won Double Gold and Texas Class Champion at the 2023 Houston Rodeo Wine Competition. I really enjoyed this one and would have it on its own anytime. This is my second favorite of what I tasted.

2019 Longhorn Red

The Longhorn Red is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah and is also a silver medal winner in Houston. It has rich, earthy flavors and has a slight jam flavor such as currant. It highlights Driftwood’s prowess in producing exceptional red wines. It’s a bold choice for those seeking a wine with character and a story to tell. Drink this one with chocolate!

2019 Alamo Red

The Alamo Red, a Bourdeaux style wine blended with Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Cab Franc, and Petite Verdot. This one won Best of Class and Double gold in the 2023 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition. This is a complex blend and was my favorite of all the wines, although it was a close call.

2021 Semi-Sweet Orange Muscat

The Orange Muscat is a real surprise as it doesn’t sound promising for those who like dry red wines and don’t lean toward sweet wines. It is not sweet like you would expect and is the perfect summer wine or spring day. Don’t leave without trying this one and getting pleasantly surprised.

Other Wines Produced

Driftwood Estate Winery’s portfolio extends beyond these highlighted wines, featuring:

  • Dry Rose
  • Sangiovese

While these are the wines available when I visited, they have a number of new wines coming the next few months including a Mourvèdre and a Cuvee Blanc.

As far as wine pricing is concerned, Driftwood has very reasonable prices for its wines, with the most expensive of what I tasted being $40 for non-members of the wine club ($32 for club members). This translates to excellent value for their wines.

The Wine Club

The Driftwood Estate Winery Wine Club offers enthusiasts a chance to deepen their connection with the winery’s offerings. Members enjoy exclusive access to new releases, member-only events, and discounts on wines and merchandise, making it an enticing option for anyone looking to explore the best of Texas wines. It offers free tastings for members and guests, and a nice 20% discount on wine bottles. The club offers only 3 and 6-bottle quarterly shipment options, all but one being the winemaker’s choice. But you can choose red, white, or mixed options. There is one 6-bottle club, the Silver 6-bottle Custom club, where the member can choose the bottles. As far as wine clubs go, this one is a great value.
