Introduction

If you’re looking for a hidden gem in the heart of Texas, look no further than Limestone Terrace in Wimberley, Texas. As a passionate enthusiast of Texas wine, I enjoyed my visit to this out of the way winery. From the moment I arrived, I was captivated by the welcoming atmosphere and most importantly, the wines that reflect the true spirit of Texas. Limestone Terrace isn’t just another stop on the Texas wine trail—it’s a destination where tradition, quality, and a deep love for winemaking come together in perfect harmony.

What Makes This Place Different?

Limestone Terrace is off the beaten path in Wimberley. You’ll turn off the highway and then make your way there over a multitude of road surfaces.

My Wine Pick

During my visit, I had the pleasure of tasting several of Limestone Terrace’s offerings, but the standout for me was their 2022 Albarino. This wine embodies everything that makes Texas wine special—it has a nice balance of crispness and acidity. This balance acidity and crispness makes it a versatile choice, perfect for pairing with a simple charcuterie board. If you’re visiting Limestone Terrace, this is the wine you absolutely must try.

History and Facility

Limestone Terrace has a rich history rooted in a deep respect for the land and a passion for winemaking. The winery was founded by two families: the Stovall’s and Dierickx’s. Following a fire in 2011 that devastated the area, they came together to reimagine and rebuilt the area into Limestone Terrace winery. Over the years, Limestone Terrace has evolved, but it has never lost sight of its commitment to quality. The facilities are a perfect blend of rustic charm and modern convenience, with a beautiful tasting room that offers panoramic views of the surrounding vineyards. The outdoor patio is an ideal spot to relax with a glass of wine, enjoying the serene Texas landscape.

The vineyards host three different varietals: Mourvédre, Sangiovese, and Albarino, which get coupled with other grapes from the Texas High Plains to produce their wines.

The Wines

Memorable Wine(s): Unfortunately, none of the wines really stood out to me although the Albarino was close.

Good, But Not Memorable Wine(s): 2019 Mourvèdre, 2019 Sangiovese, 2020 Dolcetto, 2021 Barrel Aged Roussanne, 2022 Albarino

Not So Good Wine(s): 2021 Sparkling Rose

Other Wines

In addition to the wines I tasted above, Limestone Terrace has several other offerings, including:

Red: 2020 Teroldego (Wine Club only), 2020 Aglianico, 2020 Estate Mourvèdre, 2020 Montepulciano, 2020 Tempranillo

White: 2021 Barrel Aged Trebbiano, 2022 Fiano (out of stock at my visit)

The white wines range in price from $36 to $42 per bottle making it not the least expensive I’ve seen, but not the most expensive. The reds range from $40 to $75 per bottle, with the average bottle being in the $42-$45 range.

For the quality of the wines, I am not inclined to state that these wines are a great value. I find they are a bit too expensive for the quality of the wine. Even tastings are rather expensive, with the least expensive of the two options being $30 each, and the premier tasting at $50 each.

Wine Club

For those who want to take their Limestone Terrace experience to the next level, the Wine Club is a must. Membership offers exclusive access to limited-edition wines, special events, and generous discounts and is available in 3,6, 12-bottle memberships that come with 10, 15, and 20% discounts respectively on all wines and merchandise. As a member, you’ll receive quarterly shipments of the winery’s finest offerings, carefully selected to showcase the best of each season. The wine club offers a complimentary glass(es) at signup, and complimentary tastings or glasses of wine with each visit, winemaker’s tours, and first access to winery events. For the current details, check out the Limestone Terrace Wine Club page.

Conclusion

In conclusion, Limestone Terrace is a nice winery offering some decent wines that in my opinion do not hit the wow factor I have experienced at other wineries. I was hoping that the drive down the gravel roads was going to lead me to a diamond in the rough, but unfortunately it led me only to a nice quaint winery with middle of the road wines.

Ok, to go along with your amazing Limestone Terrace wine, you need to complete the experience with the appropriate glasses and accessories. Don’t diminish your experience! Check out some great options in the Liquid Lonestar Marketplace!
