What Makes This Place Different?

Hawk’s Shadow Winery sets itself apart with its array of amazing wines named after animals at the winery (the horse, of course, but also goats).

It’s a little way off the beaten path, but well worth it. Our service was fantastic, probably the best I have had at any winery – ever. Not only were we tasting from an elevated list, but we received many additional ones for comparison, and our host was 110% enthusiastic about every one.

My Wine Pick

If you’re looking for the best wine to pick at Hawk’s Shadow Winery, I highly recommend their 2020 G Darryl Carmenere. On their white side, the 2023 Vin D’or Sauvignon Blanc is the winner. But note, it was really difficult to narrow down to these two as there are several memorable wines at HSV (see below under memorable wines).

History and Facility

Hawk’s Shadow Winery has a rich history rooted in family traditions and a deep love for the land. The winery, established in 2009, has grown from a small family vineyard into a renowned name in Texas wineries.

The facilities, named after one of their beloved horses, Hawk’s Shadow Winery are as impressive as their wines, featuring a beautiful tasting room with panoramic views of the Hill Country, a cozy outdoor patio, and a state-of-the-art production facility. Unfortunately, you can’t really see the vines from the tasting room and patio, but the view of the hill country makes up for that. Each visit to Hawk’s Shadow feels like a retreat into nature’s embrace.

While in the tasting room, I looked around for medals from wine competitions and did not see any. When I inquired about it, I found out they just don’t enter their wines into these competitions. I do get it, as I don’t think many wine judges are accustomed to the terroir of Texas wine and probably can’t do a great job of judging them against other wines. But that is steadily changing. My personal opinion is they would wine a slew of awards.

The Wines

Memorable Wine(s): 2021 Juliet (Riesling), 2023 Vin D’or (Sauv. Blanc), 2020 Bandit (Petit Sirah), and of course, G Darryl Carmenere.

Good, But Not Memorable Wine(s): 2020 B Darryl Carmenere

Not So Good Wine(s): None exist at HSV!

One thing I noticed about HSV wines is the amazing bouquet each of them presents. Every wine I tasted had pronounced and unique bouquets and started each tasting off with intrigue.

Other Wines

There is a significant collection of wines from Hawk’s Shadow – far too many to taste in even three days! I would say you need to go there to experience it.
